Herbert & Sons are still one of Britain’s most respected weighing machine manufacturers. Their history goes back to the 19th century when they were founded in the Smithfield Meat Market, a surviving example of their weighing expertise can be viewed at the Ironbridge Gorge Museum. Their current weighing/pricing products can be seen built-into a large majority of the UK’s supermarket checkouts.
At a time when Japanese electronics seemed to be taking over the world, this company took the unprecedented step of questioning the validity of the ‘new’ technology and concluded that the UK could do better. A single electronic chip on a single circuit board could do the work of 9 processors found in the Far East offerings and the Lion Sovereign was born.
Unique in the market, the Sovereign featured a low-profile weighing cell and the single electronic board containing all the computing power and keyboard circuit. The casework was designed in ABS plastic with a wrap-over stainless steel weighing pan – and the separate keyboard (required by conservative butchers) could be snapped out for washing.
